Debit Cards

Greater Kinston Credit Union offers two types of debit cards: CashPoints® and Visa® Check. These cards offer a convenient way to access funds, make purchases, and obtain account information. Both types of debit cards may be used at ATMs or for purchases.

When you purchase gas “at the pump” using your debit card and select “credit” as your payment option, $26.00 will be authorized and held against your account balance until the gas station settles the actual charge for the amount pumped. To avoid the $26.00 authorization, you may select the “debit” payment option at the pump and enter your PIN or pay for your fuel inside the gas station with the cashier. Once your gas transaction is complete, the exact amount of your purchase will be held in authorization.

Visa® Account Updater (VAU)

Merchants that participate in the Visa Account Updater (VAU)2 program can now receive updated cardholder information for recurring Visa check card transactions. Information such as your expiration date, card number (if the original card was lost/stolen or transferred), and closed card notifications are updated daily and communicated directly to participating merchants with whom you have recurring payments.

This service only applies to recurring Visa check card payments. As a result, you will no longer have to contact the merchant to update your card information which will help prevent disruption of your recurring payments. You may opt out of this feature at any time by contacting your local branch or the Contact Center.

For unauthorized ATM transactions, your liability is as follows:

  • If you believe your card and PIN have been lost or stolen and notify us within two business days, your liability will not exceed $50 if someone uses your card and PIN without permission.
  • If you do NOT tell us within two business days after you learn of the loss or theft of your card and PIN, and we can prove we could have stopped someone from using the card without your permission had you notified us, you may lose as much as $500.

For unauthorized purchased transactions, your liability is as follows:

  • The cardholder has no liability for any unauthorized (fraudulent) signature based purchase transaction. This limit applies to all consumer card purchases, including those on the internet.
  • If your statement shows transactions that you did not make, notify us at once. If you do not tell us within 60 days after the statement was mailed, you may not receive the lost money if we can prove that we could have stopped someone from taking the money had you told us in time.
1 The daily purchase limit is $4,000, including a maximum cash withdrawal limit of $500 per day. However, if $500 cash is withdrawn, only $3,500 is available for purchases that day.
